Once you’ve picked up your rental car, steer over to the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum. This isn’t just a children’s museum, despite its name; it offers an excellent overview of the history of coal mining and the lives of the miners. After you’ve emerged from the mines, drive about 15 miles on WV-41N to New River Gorge National River. If you’re a fan of whitewater rafting, you’ll find outstanding rapids, but you don’t have to get wet to have a good time. The gorge also has diverse walking trails and rock climbing areas.
