Baton Rouge’s Beginnings

Europeans arrived in what became Baton Rouge in 1719. Its position along the Mississippi River ensured it had a prominent position as a trading post, and the advent of the steamboat meant its growth continued at a rapid pace. The city survived the Civil War intact, and after the war, Baton Rouge briefly lost the position of state capital to New Orleans, though it wrested the title back in 1882. Over the last few decades it has begun a revitalization project, including moving a number of businesses back to the old downtown district.

Weather in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge is just as steamy as its famous sibling, New Orleans. The city receives about 60 inches of rain per year, broken up into fairly steady monthly increments. Winter is relatively snow-free, and it sees temperatures in the mid to high 60s. Spring warms up quickly, with temperatures in the mid to high 70s and humid breezes from the Mississippi. Summers are humid and wet, with average highs in the 80s and 90s, and Baton Rouge’s position near the coast means it does occasionally experience hurricanes.
