Your Guide to Austin, TX

No trip to the Lone Star State is complete without a stop in Austin. The capital city takes great pride in its “weird” personality and unique culture, and there’s no better way to explore its many facets than in a cheap Austin, TX car rental.

Weird in Austin

The residents of Austin love music. This will be evident the moment you step off your airplane at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), which frequently features musicians playing live in the various terminals. Once you pick up you pick up one of the Austin, TX rental cars, you’ll likely see performers in stores, parks, and just about everywhere else. Austin isn’t just home to local musicians, though; it’s also the host of numerous music festivals, among them South by Southwest (SXSW) in March and Austin City Limits, which is held in October.
Let the background music become the soundtrack of your Austin trip as you drive down its streets. The Colorado River flows past the downtown area, and is full of places to walk, picnic, or rent equipment for watersports. If you prefer to stay indoors, head for the Paramount Theatre, located just over a mile from the waterfront. This playhouse, built in 1915, boasts ornate classical decoration and offers live performances and movie viewings.
Last of all, head 6 miles south to gaze upon the Cathedral of Junk, one of the most prominent contributions to the city’s “Keep Austin Weird” motto. The Cathedral of Junk is a massive art construction built entirely from city refuse, such as bicycles, televisions, signs, and bottles. You can wander through the cathedral in a few minutes or a few hours.

Beyond Austin

When you rent a car in Austin, you aren’t just bound by the city limits. Grab your keys and build an itinerary of the places you’d like to visit. Eighty miles south of Austin is San Antonio, better known as Alamo City. Stop off at the place that helped give San Antonio that nickname—The Alamo, home of one of the fiercest battles fought during the Texas Revolution. After taking in some history, have some fun at AT&T Center® and watch the San Antonio Spurs take on all comers.
If you have time to embark on a road trip, head 165 miles east to Houston, the largest city in the southern states. Learn about humanity’s efforts to reach the stars at Space Center Houston, or spend some quality time with the zebras and giraffes at the Houston Zoo. If you’re a sports fan, we also recommend watching the Houston Astros play at Minute Maid Park®, or see the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center®.

The History of Austin

When Austin was first settled by Europeans in 1837, it was called Waterloo. In 1839, the settlement was renamed Austin after Stephen F. Austin, also known as the “Father of Texas,” who helped a number of people settle in the area. In 1871, the arrival of the railroad turned Austin into a trading hub, and the population swelled over the next few decades. In the 1880s, Austin took on a new role—that of university town—when construction of the University of Texas at Austin began. The steady influx of students that came with higher education led to a constant stream of construction that lasted into the 20th century.

Weather in Austin

Austin is one of the brightest states in the country, with 300 days of sunshine per year. If you’re visiting in summer, you can expect hot, wet summers, with average highs in the 90s much of the city’s 34 inches of rain.
