Rented a car for a one way trip down the coast of California. Received car very quickly even though it was a holiday week. Front desk was very helpful texting me exactly when my car was ready.

For a car that was booked with much anxiety about 24h prior to the journey, it all went seamlessly. I used a website geared at finding me the best deal - we were not fussed about the type of car we'd be driving, as long as it got us from San Francisco to San Diego safely. We made the journey in a new Ford Fiesta, deffo an upgrade from the 14 year-old Peugeot 206 that I drive back home. The only thing that took me aback slightly was how much a 1/4 tank of petrol set me back at returning the car ($30)...

The pickup location is in the middle of the city, and pickup was fast. However, the staff didn't seem to have much knowledge other than handing us the keys. (1) We inspected the car for damage before driving off (as is usual for a rental), and we noticed a couple of scratches/scuffs. However, the staff seemed surprised that we wanted to report them. We got a form from a tech in the garage, but then when we tried to note the damages and submit it, the first tech had disappeared and a second tech had no idea what to do with the form. We went back up to the counter, but the person at the counter didn't know what to do with that form either; he said you just fill that in and take it with you. We had to show him where he's supposed to sign their copy, and which part they're supposed to detach and give us, etc. We did our due diligence, and I can understand in 90% of the cases it's just a formality, but we were surprised that the staff didn't even know the procedure for inspecting a rental car for damages before driving off. (2) They upgraded us to a full size car, which I was not very happy about. But that happens from time to time in a rental, so it's not a deal breaker. However, whenever that has happened to me in the past, the staff have informed me right at the outset, and asked me if I was okay with it. Not this time. I only found out about the upgrade when I went down to the garage (when I took the keys, I asked the counter staff what sort of car I was getting, and his response was I have no idea). When I mentioned the full size car to him after I had seen it, he said oh yeah, we upgraded you. I have a couple of good reasons for *not* wanting a full size car, such as gas mileage and parking ease on city streets, so I would have appreciated a heads up at check in.
