My experience was average with Hertz. It took a VERY long time to pick up the car with angry customers jumping the queue and shouting at the staff. Our car was not available to pick up after speaking with staff at the counter and we had to wait for it to be cleaned. The vehicle itself was in good condition and was reliable throughout the rental period. Drop off was easy.

I found out at the rental office that my reservation didn't include any excess limit - i.e. I was responsible for the entire value of the car, £10,000 without limitations. I had to purchase the basic insurance which is normally alway included in the package. But I guess this is problem - hence I'll never use the website ever again. Hertz on their side... well, take a book with you. It took me 40'+ to get my car. There were 2 other customers in the office. And I got a car which was not the category I had selected and which had not been cleaned.

My experience was that upon picking up the car and them finding out I wasn’t American or Canadian (despite seeing my licence previously and knowing I was British) I “had” to be charged a mandatory insurance fee which came to £100. I already have excess cover separately but this didn’t count apparently. They wouldn’t let me cancel and re-book as a Brit, they didn’t explain this to me beforehand and they were generally evasive and unhelpful. Thus a car for 4 days cost me £269. Ridiculously expensive.

Bought insurance online at time of booking but, when I arrived to pick the car up, they informed me that I couldn't take the car unless I bought THEIR insurance. This rental cost me 100 quid a day. Ridiculous.

I didn't take the car in the end as they forced me to pay an extra 90 pounds in taxes and then I could not return the car a little earlier as they where closed. that would have cost me another 45 pound

We had rented a luxury vehicle for 2 days out of London. On arrival to collect the vehicle we were told that we had been upgraded to a better vehicle. Wonderful we thought. We then went through the documentation process to be told that the insurance we had prepurchased through was not valid for the UK meaning we had to pay an additional amount to obtain vehicle insurance. Once that was completed we got the vehicle, programmed our destination and left only to find that the GPS was faulty. Without any other maps, we then had to negotiate London traffic and one way streets to get back to the rental agency to try and sort the issue. After pressing buttons on the dash for 30 minutes (a process which we tried before trying to drive back to the agents) they gave us a standalone GPS with no instructions, set to Spanish language and the country Portugal. Another 20 minutes gone while we sorted that out. End result, the rental cost us an extra 70 GBP and and 1.5 hours longer than expected. All told a very unexpected experience which, as an experienced traveller, I have never encountered before.

I spent an hour proving that the insurance I chose through car rentals (Allianz insurance) was valid however they still would not accept this and wanted me to use their own insurance provider. Therefore to hire the car I had to cancel my cheaper, but with more insurance coverage, provider for their more expensive with less coverage.
