I was able to pickup my SUV at the correct time. I did not get the GLA but I was upgraded to a Cadillac so it was ok. I just did not get my receipt in my email as promised.

My experience was very poor. I was FORCED to agree to take liability coverage, and was told it was required by the laws of Mexico, although I had this coverage through my American Express credit card. I was again FORCED to pay $22.00 per day, even though I didn't need this coverage.

The National rental car place at San jose Del Cabo airport did not have any record of our reservation and did not have an all wheel drive vehicle (we had reserved a 4x4 Jeep). They told us we had to go to Cabo San Lucas as that is where our reservation was. I accepted that may have been my mistake when booking, We paid $60 usd to take a cab to cabo san lucas. Upon arrival at the Cabo rental place they told us our reservation was back at san jose del cabo airport (where we had just come from and where they had no record of our reservation) and that we needed to go back there to get a car. Neither office had a car to fulfill our reservation. We waited 6 hours in cabo san lucas to pick up the most basic compact car which meant we had to change our vacation plans because we needed a 4x4 for our current itinerary. We also paid the same rate as what we had reserved for Jeep for which they gave us the complete runaround about. This was the worst rental car experience I have ever had and we were do terribly disapointed.

I paid you $230.00 for insurance. when I rented car, Alamo wanted $562.00 more for insurance. we tried the phone number to call you. no answer. they said your insurance was a waste of money. it was Mexican law to have this insurance. you should find out who you represent and the games they pull. I would not recommend you to anyone!

So I show up to Pueblo Bonito Rose on the date I scheduled my rental pick-up (the date and location had already been pre-selected) and the hotel concierge tells me that Avis is closed on Sundays. Why did the website even allow me to schedule the pickup on this date? Pueblo Bonito was nice enough to call Avis' other location nearby and I spoke with Avis on the phone, they sent a guy with my rental. He said he'd be there in 10 minutes, that was a lie, I waited at least half an hour. They provide a wifi box which is kinda neat, but the guy gave it to me without a charging cable and I wasn't able to charge it, so this was only useful on the first drive, after the first day of using it, it died and was useless. He told me upfront that there was no charging cable, so I was aware of this and said ok. When I returned the car at SJD Airport, Avis asks me where the cable is. I said you guys gave me the wifi box without one. They said that because there weren't any notations of the missing cable that they would have to charge me, at this point I was pretty upset. I'm just trying to drop of my car so we can catch our flight back home and now this nonsense. Long story short I spoke with the manager and flat out told them, "no, I'm not paying for a cable that we were never provided with which made this wifi box useful for only one trip" I didn't end up having to pay for the cable but then I got screwed on having to pay for a full tank of gas when I only used 1/4 of the tank, so I might as well have paid for the stupid cable. Avis never once told me anything about extra charges for gas, I guess this can be assumed but being that this was in Mexico and the first time I rent a car there, I didn't assume the rules were the same. I would've put a few bucks worth of gas to replenish the tank had i known I was going to have to pay the full price of a tank. Terrible experience!

Frequently asked questions

What's the best way to get a cheap car rental in Cabo San Lucas?

If you are looking for some of the best car rental rates, then you are in the right place. Get the most savings on your tip to Cabo San Lucas by doing a few things:

  • Read through the mileage policy to avoid any surprise expenses
  • Reserve your rental as far ahead of time as possible
  • Avoid airport pick-ups or drop-offs if possible; they usually are pricier
  • Compare daily and weekly rates; you might save more with a longer rental

Before you book, make sure you go through the rental policy.

What kind of vehicle should I rent while in Cabo San Lucas?

With so many vehicle types to choose from, it can be tough to figure out which car is ideal for your getaway. Nonetheless, keep in mind your needs and how many people you are driving with. Look at the table below to help you select the best car for your visit.

How old do I have to be to rent a car in Cabo San Lucas?

The minimum age to rent a car in most cities, like Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, is 21. However, there is ordinarily an added charge for anyone under 25. Moreover, the age restriction may be different for premium, large capacity, SUVs, or other higher category vehicles. Check with the rental car company before you book.

Do I need insurance when I rent a car?

You are required to have insurance before you rent in Mexico. You might also be able to purchase additional insurance through the supplier for your trip, if you think your insurance won't cover your rental.

Many of the major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover) typically cover your car rental. However, many of them have limitations, such as not completely covering large vehicles, like premium models or some SUVs. Be sure to find out by calling your credit card company to find out what kind of coverage is offered before you travel to Los Cabos. Additionally, as a United States citizen, you can also purchase Collision Damage Coverage with CarRentals.com at checkout.

Am I required to fill my tank before I bring the rental car back?

We advise a full tank policy. You pick up your rental with a full tank. If you return your rental with less fuel than you began with, the company may charge a premium to top it back off. For a cheaper rate, it is best to fill up your tank before you return the car.

Can I reserve a one-way rental in Cabo San Lucas?

Most car rental companies offer one-way rentals. It may be more convenient to drop off your vehicle in a different area. Be aware that there is generally an added fee for choosing a one-way drop off. Be sure to know the supplier's policy to know exactly how much it may cost you.

Should I get unlimited miles when I rent a car in Cabo San Lucas?

Many suppliers provide unlimited miles, but you need to make sure it is part of your bundle that you are purchasing. It's useful to know how far you want to drive and plan your trips in advance. Although most car rental providers offer unlimited mileage, if it isn't part of your rental agreement you could face additional cost. You may need to have unlimited miles if you're thinking of some road trips to find out what else Los Cabos or even Mexico has to offer.
