The car I reserved was a mid size. When I got to the counter, they upgraded me to an SUV - no extra charge.

I had to wait in line for over an hour to get my car. Then the sales clerk tried to talk me out of the SUV I had rented into a small car. The SUV I received had dents all over it

They did not have the car that we had pre-ordered. But like most rental car companies, they get around that by saying like vehicle. Our like vehicle was smaller than the model we reserved.It was very expensive for five days too. Plus, it had an overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke that was disgusting. None of the six of us are smokers. I called the 800 number and had a long conversation with someone who couldn't do anything about it. That person transferred me to another department. I sat on hold for 50 minutes listening to some cheesy music before I gave up. I think we paid too much. I also think their customer service is horrible. I could tell the person on the phone who could barely speak English didn't really want to offer anything as far as a solution. So, we are not happy and will likely not ever use Avis again as a result. We are used to using Enterprise and have had fairly decent experiences with them each time.
