Things to See and Do
West Palm Beach itself is fairly compact, and a car rental allows you to navigate from one point to another fairly quickly. When you’re not stretching out on John D. MacArthur Beach State Park or snorkeling in the Atlantic’s blue waters, hit some high notes at the Palm Beach Opera, located just 8 miles south. Rental cars in West Palm Beach are the perfect way to get to the performance in style, and a secluded place to warm up your vocal cords if you feel compelled to sing a few renditions of the songs afterward. After giving a standing ovation, head 4 miles south to the Palm Beach Zoo and go wild. At the zoo, you’ll find more than 23 acres inhabited by over 800 different kinds of animals. Once you’ve been wowed by the wildlife, finish your journey with a trip to the Mounts Botanical Garden, located about 5 miles east, to experience fun in full bloom.
There’s lots to do outside West Palm Beach, too, and a car rental allows you to see it all. Fifty miles south of the city is the famous Fort Lauderdale, where you can cruise Las Olas Boulevard and pick out the perfect place to dine in the evening. For a taste of Florida’s outstanding natural beauty, keep going an extra 65 miles south to Everglades National Park and take in some of the extraordinary flora and fauna.
The Way to West Palm Beach
The area that became West Palm Beach, FL was originally inhabited by the Seminole Indians. By the time the United States began settling West Palm Beach in the 1870s and 1880s, the Seminole were largely gone. West Palm Beach incorporated in 1894. Steady growth was punctuated by the arrival of Palm Beach Air Force Base in World War II; like many bases in the Florida area, it brought in thousands of service members and their families, many of whom stayed in the city after the war.
Sun, Sun, Sun
Florida has long been a vacation destination because of its beautiful weather. Warm, sunny days and pleasant temperatures are the norm in West Palm Beach; the lowest the temperature ever gets is in the mid-60s. That doesn’t mean the city never experiences adverse weather, as summer tends to be both humid and wet. Afternoon thunderstorms are a frequent companion to 90-degree days during the hot season, leading to a yearly average of 62 inches of rain on West Palm Beach.
