Arriving in SoCal
When you arrive at San Diego International Airport (SAN), exit your terminal and make your way outside. Car rental shuttles wait at the Terminal 1and Terminal 2 center traffic aisles. The shuttle will take you to one of the two rental car areas, located off Harbor Blvd. and Kettner Blvd., respectively. Additional car rental companies may be located further away, and you may need to arrange a shuttle or taxi to get to them. Downtown San Diego is a mere 3 miles away from the airport; once you’ve picked up the keys to your car rental, you’ll be on your way to its glassy skyscrapers shortly.
Exploring San Diego
Stop off at the U.S.S. Midway Museum. The Midway is a World War II-era aircraft carrier, and once aboard you’ll view exhibits dedicated to its time in service and San Diego’s role as a “Navy town.” For a taste of San Diego’s history, head 3 miles north along I-5 to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Explore preserved structures dating back to the 1800s, shop for candles, soap, or handmade items in the many boutique shops, and enjoy Mexican food at its numerous restaurants.
San Diego airport rental cars give you the freedom to see more than just the downtown area. Follow I-5 about 8 miles north of the city and you’ll come to Pacific Beach, where you can suntan, surf, eat, and relax. If you’d like to get away from the waterfront, head 60 miles east on I-8 and Highway 79 to Julian, a quaint inland town famous for its beautiful surroundings and its delicious pies.
Leaving America’s Finest City
When you’re ready to bid San Diego a fond farewell, drive back to SAN to relinquish your vehicle. Follow the signage to return your car rental to the appropriate area off Kettner or Harbor Blvd., and take the shuttle to your terminal; depending on traffic, you want to budget extra time for the journey between the shuttle lot and the terminal.
Browsing the Airport
San Diego International Airport (SAN) is commonly known as Lindbergh Field, and serves over two dozen passenger and cargo airlines. Among these lines are United, Delta, and Alaska.
