Your journey to the City of Brotherly Love won’t be complete without a stop at the Philadelphia Zoo or a day trip beyond city limits. Instead of tailoring your itinerary to public transportation schedules, or trying to flag down taxis, pick up a cheap Philadelphia airport car rental immediately after your arrival and cruise through Pennsylvania in style.…
Obtaining Your Car at the Airport
When you arrive, collect your luggage, and pass through your terminal’s baggage claim area. The rental car shuttle will pick you up and take you to your preferred car rental company. A trip takes about 4 to 6 minutes, as each on-site car rental company has its own lot. In addition, many car rental companies are located off-site, and may provide transportation for you to reach them. We suggest you contact the company of your choice to verify transportation options to your pick-up and drop-off location. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is located within Philly, so once you obtain your car rental keys, you’re in for a quick trip to the downtown area.
Things to do in Philadelphia
Start your Philadelphia adventure with a visit to some of its historic buildings. Steer your PHL car rental toward Independence National Historical Park, home of Independence Hall. This stately building is where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were eventually adopted. Tour its chambers, many of which appear as they did in the 18th century. From there, head about 2 miles west to the Mutter Museum, a collection of fascinating medical specimens and oddities. Whether you want to see a piece of Albert Einstein’s brain or are fascinated by the unique natural embalming process that created the Soap Lady, you’ll leave feeling informed.
A car rental means you can head outside of Philadelphia, too. About 60 miles east is Atlantic City, New Jersey, where you can relax by the seashore or do a little responsible gaming in the casinos. If you’d rather stay dry, drive 45 miles along I-95 to Doylestown, PA and enjoy a trip to the Mercer Museum, which chronicles early Americana.
If you have a taste for public transit, you can do without a rental car in downtown Philadelphia. You may, however, consider obtaining a one-way car rental to explore Newark, New Jersey, located about 90 miles north, if you will be flying out of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
When you’re ready to leave Philadelphia, return your car rental to its company on Arrivals Road where you picked up your set of wheels for your time in Philadelphia and board the courtesy shuttle. In about 5 minutes, you’ll be back at PHL. If you’ve rented a car from an off-airport agency, check with your rental car provider as the agency may provide a shuttle or additional means of transportation to get you to the terminal. Originally known as “Hog Island” due to the pigs that roamed the area, is known today as PHL. Philadelphia International Airport now has 7 terminals—and no feral pigs—and serves over a dozen airlines, among them United and JetBlue.
If you have some time before boarding, relax. Book a massage or a beauty treatment at the on-site spa, browse the bookstore offerings, or enjoy a beverage and a Philly cheesesteak sandwich before heading home. If you just want a quick coffee and a snack to tide you over while you browse social media, stop at one of the airport cafes.
