A trip to Miami means fun in the sun amidst offshore breezes and tropical rain showers. Don’t confine yourself to public transportation or the meters in taxicabs; instead, rent a car at Miami Airport and go sightseeing on the cheap.…
Getting to Your Rental Car
After you land at Miami International Airport (MIA), grab your luggage, and follow signs to Central Station. Exit the terminal and take the elevator in the adjacent building to the third-floor train station. The automated MIA Mover will take you to the Rental Car Center, located just over 1 mile away where you can pick up your car rental and begin your Florida trip. Additionally, several car rental companies are located off-site and may require you to arrange for shuttles to bring you to their location. Florida’s capital, Miami, is just 10 miles southeast of the airport and awaiting you with its many adventures.
Motor Through Miami
Drive your car rental 11 miles south on FL-836 E. to the Miami Seaquarium. This 38-acre park is home to sea turtles, manatees, and a variety of marine mammals. From there, head about 9 miles west on the Nathan Lester Highway to Miami Beach. Drive north on Collins Avenue to find the perfect place to eat, or just park at the beach and enjoy some of Florida’s legendary sunshine.
A Miami International Airport car rental doesn’t limit you to just Miami, of course. Thirty miles north on I-95 is Fort Lauderdale, a beach city in its own right and home to the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale. This museum hosts thousands of pieces, among them ceramics, Cuban artwork, and selections of art from Northern Europe. If you prefer your art to be of the natural variety, consider venturing about 40 miles east on U.S. 1 to Everglades National Park, one of the most remarkable ecosystems in the world.
Return Your Rental Car
Once you’ve had enough fun in the sun, return to Miami Airport to return your car rental and travel home. Return your car rental to its agency at the Rental Car Center or at one of the other off-site locations, then head to the elevators to reach the fourth floor. Once there, take the MIA Mover back to the airport.
Relax While Waiting
Originally constructed in 1928, MIA has three terminals and serves over 50 airlines, among them American Eagle, and Caribbean Airlines. While you’re waiting to board your flight, explore some of the art installations scattered throughout the terminals and concourses. You might enjoy a drink and a gourmet snack at a bistro, or sit down for a burger before getting on your plane. If you’re in need of some entertainment to bring on the plane, stop by one of the bookstores to pick up a new novel or magazine.
