Cool in Kauai
Throw your luggage in the back of your Kauai rental car and take the island by storm. The island is only 33 miles long and 25 miles wide, so you can drive just about everywhere in a fairly short period of time. Hike over the volcanic terrain to the Napali Coast, an expansive shoreline privy to some of the best beaches in Hawaii. Afterward, drive 18 miles south to Waimea Town, a historic seaport not far from where Cook originally dropped anchor in the late 1700s. Wander around the waterfront, or do a little shopping in the local boutiques to pick out the souvenir. Seven miles southeast of Waimea Town is Hanapepe Town. This community focuses on preserving its historic buildings as well as nurturing local artists, and invites you stop by to buy a painting to take home with you.
Coming to Kauai
The first European settlers to arrive in Kauai referred to the Hawaiian islands as the “Sandwich Isles,” not because King Kamehameha made a mean grilled cheese, but rather after Cook’s patron, the Earl of Sandwich. Settlers quickly discovered there was money to be made in sugar and pineapple, and by 1893 the new residents of Hawaii overthrew the monarchy established by Kamehameha the Great in 1810. Kauai’s lush rainforests, beautiful white beaches, and nearly perfect climate began attracting vacationers in the early 1900s, and the island’s allure has never faded.
Life in Paradise
The Hawaiian islands are often referred to as “Paradise,” and Kauai is no exception. The average temperature is usually in the 70s and 80s year-round, though it is typically cooler in the elevated mountainous areas. The mountain region also sees over 400 inches of rain a year. The beach areas may get as little as 18 inches of precipitation, and most of that happens at night, so your surfing and beachcombing will be unaffected. If you are here for the water, you’ll be thrilled; the Pacific Ocean gets up to 80 degrees here.
