Pick Up Your Car
George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), also called Houston airport, keeps its on-site rental cars at the Consolidated Car Rental Facility. Your terminal will have a “Rental Car” sign, and you will board the white/maroon Rental Car Shuttles. From there, it’s a five-minute trip to Consolidated Car Rental Facility on the east side of JFK Blvd. If you’ve rented your car off-site, you will need to arrange for a shuttle or cab to take you to the facility.
Out & About in Houston
Once you’ve got your IAH car rental, find out why Houston is called Space City. Space Center Houston is 45 miles south of the airport, and houses several space capsules, a Skylab mock-up, and numerous other exhibits related to the space age. Come back down to earth at the Museum of Fine Arts, which is 24 miles south of the airport and home to over 60,000 pieces of art in a variety of mediums.
Next, head outside city limits and pay a visit to Galveston. This port city is 70 miles south of IAH, and is home to a number of attractions. Take a ride on the sailing ship Elissa, tour the extraordinary Victorian castle that is Bishop’s Palace, or enjoy a show at the Grant 1894 Opera House. Alternatively, you can head 50 miles north of the airport to Sam Houston National Forest, where you can hike, camp, and hunt at different portions of the year. Please ensure you have the proper permits.
Returning Your Car & Waiting for Your Flight
When you’re ready to leave Houston, return your car rental to the Consolidated Rental Car Facility. The Rental Car Shuttle will bring you to one of IAH’s five terminals. If you’ve rented a car from an off-airport site, you may need to make additional arrangements to return to the airport.
IAH serves over 40 million passengers per year, many of them flying on United, Delta, and dozens of other airlines. If you’ve got some time before your flight, relax at one of the numerous eateries; whether you’re in the mood for barbecue or Asian-style food, you’ll find something to whet your appetite. You can also pick up Western-themed souvenirs (or replace your headphones) at one of the many specialty retailers throughout the terminals.
