Welcome to Baltimore, MD, a city full of delicious food, colorful characters, and plenty of adventure. Whether you’re here to scope out its historic past or are just searching for a good time at its numerous restaurants and pubs, you’re bound to find everything you need in the place nicknamed “Charm City.” A cheap Baltimore car rental will make your trip even more enjoyable.…
Drive Through B’more
Once you’ve got your car rental keys in hand, drive out to the Inner Harbor. This area spans several miles of waterfront, and a car rental allows you to easily get to such places as the American Visionary Art Museum, Geppi's Entertainment Museum, the U.S.S. Constellation, the National Aquarium, and much more. If you’re visiting during baseball season, why not head to nearby Oriole park at Camden Yards™ and watch the Baltimore Orioles swing away?
After you’ve stocked up on hot dogs and jerseys, park your car rental and take a water taxi from the Inner Harbor to the iconic Fort McHenry for a history break, where you can learn more about the War of 1812 and the writing of the National Anthem. When you rent a car in Baltimore, there’s no corner of the city you can’t explore and enjoy.
After you have visited Fort McHenry, you may wish to see the original Star-Spangled Banner that inspired the song. The Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of American History is 40 miles away by car in Washington D.C. On your way back to Baltimore, stop at Arlington National Cemetery to pay your respects to those buried there—you’ll be back in the city in time for dinner.
The History of Baltimore
Baltimore first set up shop in 1729, and acted as a storage area for sugar imports from the Caribbean. The nation’s growing sweet tooth meant a tremendous amount of profit down at the docks, which led to even greater import of foodstuffs. Baltimore’s claim to fame, however, is serving as the inspiration for the National Anthem: during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was so struck by the bombardment of the city that he wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” immediately afterward. History continues to treat Baltimore well; the city boasts nearly 300 historical properties, and its past is a major part of its tourism draw.
If you’re visiting Baltimore during the winter, bring a coat: temperatures can reach 50 degrees, but you’re more likely to see numbers in the high 30s and 40s. Baltimore does get about 20 inches of snow per year, but that can vary depending on the severity of the season. You may also experience freezing sleet, which occurs when cold air from the east gets trapped against western mountains. In contrast, summer temperatures average in the 80s and humidity levels are high. Thunderstorms often strike during the summer, so no matter what season you visit in, you may well experience some dampness.
